In the spring of 2001, a diverse group of social and environmental justice enthusiasts working in Japan began a discussion by email. Many of us were in the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme, while others worked for Japanese universities or non-profit groups. All of us were earning money, but we found that when we put that money in the bank it would often be loaned out to the very projects that we opposed in our activism. How could we hope to achieve our goals if we spent 20 hours working for social and environmental justice on the week-ends and 40 hours earning money to fund exploitation during the week?
Out of this question, our partnership was born. Five investors pooled their savings and opened a brokerage account in the name of RainFrog Ethical Investment Partnership. The partners drafted an Agreement of Partnership that would allow each partner to have a voice in the partnership and in its investments. Then, the partners elected Tucker Gilman, who had several years' prior experience managing investment partnerships, as RainFrog's first president. In December of 2001, RainFrog made its first investments.
RainFrog has changed quite a bit since its inception. We have added partners in six countries, and other partners have withdrawn their investments to buy homes or start businesses. We have achieved a track record of outperforming the equity markets and a majority of managed mutual funds. In 2006 we registered as a limited partnership under the laws of the US State of Wisconsin. However, through it all our underlying principals have not changed. We remain a member-governed investment cooperative, and strive to offer a socially and environmentally friendly investment opportunity that our partners can rely on.
